Creativity comes in all shapes and sizes. It's found in the innovations that capture our attention and imagination and the advances that inspire us to wonder what great things are to come.

I think it would surprise you then that the definition for "creativity" is simply: the ability to create. It seems too short an explanation for something that is so highly regarded and sought after in the business world. There is always room at the company for a creative individual. They produce art in their own unique way through design, development, project management, or ongoing client relations.

So what can we as employers and professionals do to help foster that creativity within our current teams? Below is a list of 6 ways your organization can cultivate a culture that supports the creative process.

Six ways to foster workplace creativity

Encourage socializing

Promote a space where your employees mingle regularly and get to know each other on a personal level. This will help break the ice and encourage new ideas to form.

Promote creativity in all forms

Understand that inspiration is not just reserved for those who come up with ideas but also those who bring them to life. Encourage your team to be creative in their work, and praise them for any effort they make.

Be flexible

We all know that our world is changing at a rapid pace. Being flexible in our ways of thinking about business, the way we work, and how we approach our work responsibilities will help us adapt to change when it comes.

Applaud new ideas

It's not always easy to see things from different angles, but that's what brainstorming is for. If an employee is brave enough to share a new idea, don't shoot it down right away. Hear them out, and see if you can mold the idea into something great.

Take a risk

Sometimes the best way to get creative juices flowing is to take a risk. Try something new, outside of your comfort zone. This can be something as small as changing the way you do things in your office or as big as branching out into a new market.

Be patient

Rome wasn't built in a day. Innovative companies are either. It takes time for creativity to blossom, so be patient and wait to see the results.

Now that you know how to foster creativity in your team, it's time to start implementing some of these ideas. Your company culture – and your bottom line – will thank you for it!
